Café Parisien is the work of Ahcene "Ace" Mklat and his brother Hosine. The Mklats are a French-Algerian family raised between Algiers and Paris, with several boulangeries in the lineage. Ace spent years in food and beverage at the Fairmont in San Francisco before falling for Berkeley while studying at City College.
The café opened on Shattuck Avenue in June of 2024 with a simple ambition: a small French neighborhood café, run by family. Croque monsieur at lunch, egg-and-cheese on a warm croissant in the morning, café au lait by the carafe — the kind of place the brothers themselves wanted to walk into.
Everything is baked from scratch. The butter is French. The packaging is plastic-free. The people behind the counter, more often than not, are family.
